Day Master Strength: Is Your BaZi Chart Strong or Weak?

Day Master strength measures how well-supported your Day Master is by the rest of the chart. Judging it strong or weak is the key that decides which Five Elements help you and which work against you.

What Day Master strength means

The Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day — it represents you. Day Master strength asks a simple question: how well-supported is that stem by the other seven characters in the chart? A Day Master surrounded by its own element and the element that produces it is strong; one surrounded by elements that drain, control, or exhaust it is weak.

What makes a Day Master strong

Three things build strength. First, season (得令): being born in the season when the Day Master's element thrives. Second, support (得勢): many Companion stems (比劫, the same element) and Resource stems (印, the element that produces it). Third, rooting (通根): the Day Master's element appearing in the Earthly Branches below, giving it a foundation. The more of these, the stronger the Day Master.

What makes a Day Master weak

A Day Master is weakened when the chart is dominated by the three draining relationships: Output (食傷), which it spends energy producing; Wealth (財), which it spends energy controlling; and Authority (官殺), which controls and pressures it. Being born out of season and lacking roots in the branches also leaves it weak.

Why strong vs weak matters

The judgment flips the whole reading. A strong Day Master already has plenty of energy, so it benefits from elements that express, spend, or challenge it — Output, Wealth, and Authority. A weak Day Master needs reinforcement, so it benefits from Companions and Resource. The same element can be lucky in one chart and unlucky in another, depending entirely on this balance.

The Useful God (用神)

The element that best brings a chart into balance is called the Useful God (用神, yòng shén). For a weak Day Master it is usually a supporting element; for a strong one, a draining or balancing element. The Useful God is what a reading watches for in the Luck Pillars and yearly cycles — when it arrives, the period tends to flow well.

How Auvylo calculates it

Auvylo weighs season, rooting in the branches, and the generating and controlling relationships among all eight characters to score the Day Master as strong or weak, then identifies the balancing Useful God. The Hanja evidence (天干 stems, 地支 branches, and their 生克 relationships) is kept visible so you can see exactly why the chart reads the way it does.
