The Ten Day Masters (十干)
Your Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day — the single character that represents you in a BaZi chart. There are ten Day Masters, one for each Heavenly Stem (甲 乙 丙 丁 戊 己 庚 辛 壬 癸), and each pairs one of the Five Elements with a yin or yang polarity to give ten distinct core temperaments. Your Day Master is the starting point of every BaZi reading: all other characters in the chart are interpreted by their relationship to it. The portraits below are the classical archetypes — your full chart refines them with season, strength, and the Ten Gods.
- Jia 甲 (Yang Wood) The towering tree — upright, pioneering, growth-driven.
- Yi 乙 (Yin Wood) The vine and flower — flexible, adaptive, quietly persistent.
- Bing 丙 (Yang Fire) The sun — bright, warm, expressive, generous.
- Ding 丁 (Yin Fire) The candle and moonlight — warm, gentle, perceptive.
- Wu 戊 (Yang Earth) The mountain — stable, dependable, protective.
- Ji 己 (Yin Earth) The field and garden — nurturing, practical, accommodating.
- Geng 庚 (Yang Metal) The axe and ore — decisive, righteous, forceful.
- Xin 辛 (Yin Metal) The jewel and fine blade — sharp, elegant, discerning.
- Ren 壬 (Yang Water) The ocean and river — wise, far-reaching, adaptable.
- Gui 癸 (Yin Water) The rain and dew — intuitive, gentle, imaginative.
