The Ten Gods (十神)
The Ten Gods (Chinese 十神, shí shén) are the central interpretive system of BaZi, the Four Pillars of Destiny. Each "god" is not a deity but a label for the relationship between your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your birth day, which represents you — and another element in your chart. Two factors define each relationship: the Five Element cycle (does the element produce, control, or match the Day Master?) and yin-yang polarity (does it share or oppose the Day Master's polarity?). The result is ten relationships that fall into five pairs — Companions (比劫), Output (食傷), Wealth (財), Authority (官殺), and Resource (印). Reading which Ten Gods appear in a chart, and how strong each is, is how BaZi turns raw stems and branches into themes of personality, work, money, and relationships.
- Friend (比肩) Peers and self-reliance — the same element and the same polarity as you.
- Rob Wealth (劫財) Rivals and bold ambition — your element, opposite polarity.
- Eating God (食神) Easygoing creativity and enjoyment — what you naturally produce.
- Hurting Officer (傷官) Bold, rule-breaking self-expression and standout talent.
- Indirect Wealth (偏財) Fluid, opportunistic wealth and a wide social reach.
- Direct Wealth (正財) Steady, earned income and committed resources.
- Seven Killings (偏官 / 七殺) Raw pressure, drive, and challenging power.
- Direct Officer (正官) Legitimate authority, status, and self-discipline.
- Indirect Resource (偏印) Unconventional knowledge, intuition, and niche skill.
- Direct Resource (正印) Nurturing support, learning, and protection.
